On December 30, 2021, at 9:55 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to an apartment building in the 200 block of Machray Avenue for a report of the sounds of a fight coming from within a suite.
Upon arrival, a male opened the door a small amount for officers, but they could see that he was covered in blood and that a second male was severely injured inside the room. The suspect turned and ran into the suite as officers attempted to enter. The door had been partially barricaded by furniture, and an officer tried to use their Conducted Energy Weapon ("Taser") but was unsuccessful.
As officers made entry, the suspect threw an object at them, and he armed himself with a large machete – advancing towards officers in a threatening manner. Both officers deployed their Conducted Energy Weapons, and he was safely taken into custody.
The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he was upgraded to unstable condition.
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation. It is believed that the victim and suspect are known as roommates.
Kevin Andrew Grier-Bruce, a 20-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Aggravated Assault
- Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon (x2)
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
- Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order (x2)
He was detained in custody.
