Carjacking – Arrest: C20-85117

As previously released on April 21, 2020:

On April 20, 2020, at 8:41 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area of Bannerman Avenue and Charles Street after an injured elderly male had been seen lying in a back lane. Upon arrival, officers located the 68-year-old male and determined that he had been run over by his vehicle after he had been carjacked.

The 68-year-old victim was getting into his vehicle when he was confronted by two suspects; a female and a male. He was subsequently struck with an object and pulled out of the car. The suspects then fled in the vehicle and drove over the victim, causing serious injuries and leaving him in the back lane. The victim was later transported to hospital in unstable condition after being found by police.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., a Major Crimes unit observed a female driving the stolen vehicle in the area of McPhillips Street and Mapleglen Drive. General Patrol units were utilized to try to stop and contain the vehicle, but the car fled at a high rate of speed, and a pursuit ensued. The stolen car was later located abandoned in the Riverbend neighbourhood.

At approximately 12:04 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a call from a resident in the Riverbend neighbourhood after hearing a female call for help from within a garbage bin.

Officers responded and identified the female as the suspect in the carjacking. It is believed she had become stuck in the residential garbage bin while attempting to hide from police after running from the stolen vehicle. She was also found with the vehicle’s keys.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.

A 16-year-old female of Winnipeg has been charged with:

- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault
- Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance
- Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
- Operation of a Conveyance While Prohibited by Order Under Criminal Code

She was detained in custody.

Update:

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued to investigate the matter. With the assistance of the Forensic Identification Section, DNA was used to identify a second suspect.

On February 8, 2021, detectives attended the Headingley Correctional Centre and placed a male under arrest.

Tad Wayne Ivan Cook, a 24-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

- Robbery
- Aggravated Assault

He was detained in custody.
