On February 4, 2021, at approximately 2:40 p.m., a Winnipeg Police Service K-9 officer observed a stolen Chevrolet Traverse travelling in the area of Dufferin Avenue and Andrews Street. As the officer began following the vehicle, additional police units were assigned to assist.
A Stop Stick tire-deflation device was deployed at Logan Avenue and King Street. The stolen vehicle drove over the device but continued travelling onto Main Street, where it sideswiped a truck and drove into oncoming traffic. There were no injuries. The vehicle continued driving to the intersection of Alfred Avenue and Charles Street, where the driver (lone occupant) abandoned the SUV and fled on foot.
A second K-9 unit began tracking the suspect, who dropped several live shotgun shells as he ran. The suspect eventually forced his way into a house in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue, where children were present. After taking off his jacket and revealing a sawed-off shotgun, the male demanded a ride and knocked down the adult female resident.
The suspect fled the house on foot, leaving behind the shotgun. He was tracked to the 300 block of Burrows Avenue where he was taken into custody.
Willy James Junior ANDERSON, 23, of Winnipeg, was charged with:
- Break & Enter – Assault
- Possess Weapon
- Carry Concealed Prohibited Weapon
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
- Possess Prohibited/Restricted Weapon
- Possess Firearm Contrary to Weapon Contrary to Order
- Possess Property Obtained by Crime
- Fail to Comply with Release Order x 5
Anderson was detained in custody.
