Armed and Barricaded — Crisis Intervention: C21-27488

Released: February 5, 2021 at 8 a.m.

On February 4, 2021, at approximately 1:30 a.m., North District General Patrol officers and Tactical Support Team members responded to a report of a male armed with a weapon inside an apartment building in the William Whyte neighbourhood. He was making threats to harm himself and was leaning in and out of the apartment window.

The individual, suffering a mental health crisis, refused to exit the suite he was in and barricaded the door. Multiple WPS resources were deployed, including the WPS Crisis Negotiation Unit. The negotiations and crisis intervention lasted throughout the night.

At 9:45 a.m., the male surrendered to police and was safely taken to hospital with no injuries. Methamphetamine is believed to be an underlying factor in this incident.
