Winnipeg, MB – At 4:50 p.m. on July 9, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in the three-storey townhouse complex in the 100 block of Lumsden Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke in the building. A fire was located in a laundry room and quickly brought under control. Crews then worked to ventilate the smoke from the rest of the building.
Occupants of the building safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Five individuals were assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
No damage estimates are available are currently available. Observations suggest the fire was accidental originated with the clothes dryer. Residents can reduce the risk of these types of fires by following these important tips:
- Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order. Dryer ducts should be cleaned annually.
- Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry.
- Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed or restricted.
- Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running
- Never leave a dryer running when away from your home
