Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Jamison Avenue and Kildonan Drive

Released: June 11, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a one-storey, single-family home in the 500 block of Jamison Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the home. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 3:10 p.m.

All occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. No injuries were reported.

Neighbouring homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, and these occupants are expected to be able to return to their homes once crews complete their work on scene.

No damage estimates are available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Kildonan Drive fire
At 12:17 p.m., the WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm in a one-storey, single-family home in the 800 block of Kildonan Drive.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a partially-extinguished fire. Crews extinguished the fire and inspected the home to ensure there was no further risk of fire. Paramedics transported one person to hospital in stable condition.
No damage estimates are available.

Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was related to cooking. Residents are reminded of the following safety strategies:

  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time.
  • Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
  • Oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.
