Realignment of Police Resources

Released: November 8, 2019 at 8 a.m.

Winnipeg continues to face serious issues when it comes to crime. The tragic events of this year have had an impact on our community and our Service. The Winnipeg Police Service has seen an unprecedented increase in violent crime, creating a strain on resources. In addition, increased calls for service are resulting in front line members working overtime to assist in managing the call volume.

Much of the increasing demand for emergency services is driven by social problems, including many related to drugs. This is having an impact on our resources. As a result, adjustments will be made to the Major Crimes Unit, Station Duty, Traffic Unit, and the Community Relations Division. This realignment will mean more members in general patrol and investigative units.

To accomplish this, service will be reduced in other areas and will impact some services we provide to the public. This includes the centralization of all our Station Duty offices to the Headquarters Building from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, 7-days a week. Station Duty in the district offices will be closed. However, our phone and online services will still be available 24-hours a day.

The additional resources and the coordinated response of the Communication Centre, Uniform Operations, and Investigations will work to alleviate the strain on the Police Service and increase response times.
