Small section of Westview Park closed for maintenance

Released: October 19, 2018 at 12 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – A small section of Westview Park will be closed for landfill cap repair starting the week of October 22, 2018.

The multi-use park is on one of Winnipeg’s closed landfills. From 1875 to 1948, it accepted primarily ash and glass materials from the City of Winnipeg’s old garbage incinerator building.

The steep hill on the south side of the park is frequently used by people looking for a challenging workout, and over time this area has worn down to expose some of the waste.

Repairs to this section began last fall but were unable to be completed due to weather conditions. The upcoming work will include covering it with compost from the City’s leaf and yard waste composting program and planting native grass and wildflower seeds.

Barriers will be placed around the area for at least a year to allow the grass and flowers to fully establish. The public is asked to refrain from using the area until it is reopened.
