Winnipeg Police Board releases results of its 2015 community consultation meetings

Winnipeg, MB - The Winnipeg Police Board has published summaries of its 2015 community consultation meetings to give a preview of the input the Board will be considering when it updates the 2015-2019 Strategic Plan for the Winnipeg Police Service later this year.

The Board and the Service published the 2015-2019 strategic plan in May. It is the first strategic plan jointly developed by the Board and the Service, and will be updated each year to remain current with public expectations for policing and community safety in Winnipeg. The Board hosted six community consultation meetings in May and June to see whether the strategic plan met citizens' expectations and reflected their priorities.

For each of the six consultation meetings, the Board has published a summary of the input shared by citizens. As the summaries show, meeting attendees were supportive of the Service's vision, �A Culture of Safety for All.� The Service's community policing approach and its emphasis on crime prevention through social development were also popular. Meeting attendees had diverse responses when asked for their thoughts on the cost of providing police services, ways to improve safety in their communities and ideas for improving trust in the police. Created in 2013, the Winnipeg Police Board has a mandate to maintain public trust in the Winnipeg Police Service and ensure police services are delivered in accordance with community needs, values and expectations. It sets priorities for the Police Service through its strategic plan, and consults with the community to determine those priorities. The Board has finished its consultation meetings for 2015 but will continue to accept written submissions until October 1.
