Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's fall cleanup of streets will begin Sunday evening, October 26, 2014, weather permitting, and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. Activities involve removing debris and leaves that collect on the street during the fall season. Areas of Winnipeg where the accumulation of leaves is particularly heavy will be targeted.
Temporary "no parking" signs will be placed in advance in some areas where parked cars would hinder the cleanup operation. When these signs are in place, motorists are encouraged to find alternate parking during the posted times to avoid being ticketed or towed.
Motorists and pedestrians are urged to use caution around cleanup crews and heavy equipment which will be operating throughout the city over the coming weeks.
During the cleanup operation, crews will transport the leaves they collect to the City's composting site at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility.
How you can help
Residents are reminded that the curbside yard waste collection program will continue until mid-November, weather permitting. It is collected once every two weeks, on the same day of the week that garbage and recycling carts are emptied. For more information, visit City of Winnipeg - Yard Waste Collection. Yard waste must be placed in reusable containers (e.g., old blue boxes, plastic tubs, old garbage containers), cardboard boxes or compostable paper yard waste bags. Please place your yard waste containers at least an arm’s length away from your garbage and recycling carts.
Residents can also take their yard waste to the compost area at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility. Yard waste will not be accepted in plastic bags, either at the curb or at the landfill. Tipping fees do not apply to loads of only yard waste (no garbage in the vehicle).
Citizens are cautioned not to rake yard waste material or other debris onto streets or to place yard waste material into manholes or ditches. This can plug drains which increases the risk of basement flooding and contravenes one or more City By-Laws.
