Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Pembina Highway residential complex fire

Released: October 8, 2014 at 2:44 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - At 9:35 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a report of smoke in the lower level of a two-and-a-half storey residential complex in the seventeen-hundred block of Pembina Highway. Upon inspection of the building, firefighters discovered a fire in the lower level’s storage locker area. Crews forced entry into the storage locker area and encountered heavy smoke and fire.

Residents of the building were self-evacuating upon the arrival of fire crews, and displaced tenants were sheltered in Winnipeg Transit buses until firefighters were able to clear the residual smoke.

Cause of the fire is under investigation and there were no injuries. A damage estimate is unavailable at this time.

The WFPS would like to commend tenants of the building who promptly evacuated the premise when smoke alarms were sounded.
