Winnipeg, MB - Committed to more than a decade of providing positive spaces and facilities for Winnipeg's families and youth, Mayor Sam Katz, joined by Councillor Jeff Browaty, today announced a commitment of $520,000 to playground and park improvements at Chornick Park.
“Investing in our children and families has remained my top priority for the entire 10 years that I have had the honour to serve Winnipeggers as Mayor,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I am proud that to have worked directly with neighbourhoods across the City to ensure we build skate spots, team spaces and play structures they need to maintain healthy positive families close to home.”
“Mayor Katz has been a tireless supporter of parks and recreational facilities throughout the City during his time as Mayor,” explained North Kildonan Councillor Jeff Browaty. “These significant improvements being announced today at Chornick Park are in addition to the replacement of the Bronx Park Community Centre, the new roof on Gateway Rec Centre’s arenas, the property acquisition and paving of the Northeast Pioneer’s Greenway, Chief Peguis Trail Greenway and Active Transportation Bridge, Jill Officer Park spray pad, completion of the Kilcona Park Master Plan and over a dozen playground replacements, just in the North Kildonan ward.”
The first phase of upgrades at Chornick Park, approved and funded through the City and Province’s Building Communities Initiative, will commence this week. The second phase, announced today, will commence in Spring 2015 and playground/park improvements will include:
- New play equipment for children 2-12 years old
- New engineered wood fiber safety surfacing
- New timber edging
- New benches and picnic table
- New pathway
- Planting of new trees
- Ball diamond improvements (new back stop and granular improvements to back stop)
- Expansion of skate spot from 180 SQ. M. (existing) to 350 SQ. M.
The second phase of the Chornick Park Playground Improvement project is funded by the Mayor’s Office Civic Initiatives fund ($401,600) and from the North Kildonan Ward Land Dedication Reserve ($118,400).
