PACER program helps keep Winnipeggers healthy this summer

Winnipeg, MB - This summer, the Paramedics Active in Community Education and Response (PACER) program is cycling through Winnipeg’s downtown to provide immediate medical assistance to those in need, and to promote a healthy lifestyle. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service’s (WFPS) PACER program has approximately 20 Winnipeg paramedics who serve the community by bicycle.

“The PACER program is a great way for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service to be on the street serving Winnipeggers and educating the public on how to be active and safe during the hot summer months,” said John Lane, Fire & Paramedic Chief. “Everyone wants to get out there and enjoy the heat, and the PACER program can help people do so safely.”

The PACER unit patrols parks, bike paths and public events in Winnipeg’s downtown, and provides treatment and assessments to people needing medical care while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle to the public.

The unit also provides emergency service coverage at large events, where paramedics on bicycle are highly visible and can easily manoeuvre through crowds to reach people in need of medical assistance.

With the temperatures continuing to be warm, Winnipeggers are reminded to practice heat and sun safety. Remember to check the weather forecast before spending a long period of time outside, and be prepared to cope with the heat. You can prevent heat illness by drinking plenty of fluids, wearing a hat, appropriate clothing and sunscreen, planning outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, and ensuring that children and pets are never left alone in closed vehicles or direct sunlight.
