Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Sam Katz is encouraging Winnipeg families to switch off their lights on Saturday night, joining millions of people around the world that will be symbolically going dark for one hour to raise awareness for environmental issues.

“Earth Hour is a great opportunity for families to talk about the small changes that we can all make to conserve energy and protect the environment,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I encourage all Winnipeggers to take part in this global movement by powering-off their non-essential lights and electronics on Saturday night.”

In Winnipeg, Earth Hour will be observed between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., local time. During that period, only security and safety lighting will remain on at City Hall.

Earth Hour, which is now in its eighth year, began in Sydney, Australia and has grown to a global movement observed by hundreds of millions of people in over 150 countries and territories.
