Winnipeg, MB - The 2013-14 CIS Women's Volleyball Champions received City of Winnipeg Outstanding Achievement Award Medals from Mayor Sam Katz at a celebration at City Hall today.
The University of Manitoba Bisons Women’s Volleyball Team captured the national title from the defending CIS champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, in the final on March 2, 2014 at the University of Regina in three straight sets. This is the 6th CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship and the 40th CIS National Championship title won by University of Manitoba Bison teams.
“I am proud to present the U of M Bisons Women’s Volleyball team with Outstanding Achievement Awards, following the team’s recent victory at the CIS Championships,” said Mayor Katz. “Along with talent and skill, it takes a tremendous amount of dedication and commitment to compete at this level, and this team has proven that they have what it takes to be the best in Canada.”
Mayor Katz presented the Outstanding Achievement Award medals to the team, coaches and staff at the noon-hour ceremony. The Bisons played a perfect 9-0 in sets at the CIS Championship.
"The University of Manitoba congratulates our Bison Women’s Volleyball Team, this year's CIS National Champions,” said Dr. David T. Barnard, President, University of Manitoba. “Our entire university community is proud to celebrate the outstanding commitment and exceptional accomplishment of our student athletes who balance the demands of performing both on-court and in the classroom; and of their coaches, trainers and therapists who teach our athletes to perform their best and keep them motivated, strong and healthy throughout the season."
"Our goal from the outset of the season was to win the 2014 CIS National Championship, and we never wavered from our commitment, said Head Coach Ken Bentley. “It was the most complete performance I have ever had over the course of a championship at Manitoba and I could not be more proud of this group. To play three matches over three days without losing one set, in retrospect, was a pretty special achievement. That was a testament to the discipline of our team and our play.”
The Outstanding Achievement Award Medal is presented to champions of recognized national or international non-Olympic events who are citizens or residents of Winnipeg.
