Assiniboine Riverwalk to temporarily close for riverbank repairs

Released: December 6, 2013 at 10:50 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - The public is advised the Assiniboine Riverwalk will be closed starting Monday, December 9, 2013 to complete repairs to the riverbank adjacent to the Riverwalk from the train bridge near The Forks to the Legislative Buildings.

Due to the high river water velocities experienced in the 2011 flood, the riverbank armour (riprap rock) oundation areas of the Riverwalk sustained extensive damage. In order to maintain a stable riverbank and Riverwalk, the City will be restoring these areas to pre-2011 conditions.

The Riverwalk will be closed to pedestrian traffic from December 9 through to December 21 and again from January 2 through January 31. The Riverwalk will be open December 22 to January 1.

Pedestrians will still be able to access and use Assiniboine Avenue throughout construction.

Should the Red River Mutual Trail (skating path and warming huts) open while construction is underway, the trail will continue to operate.
