Winnipeg, MB - Providing citizens and their families with modern and safe facilities to participate in leisure and sport is the goal of a new funding model that will see new investments in community parks and recreation.
The new program, known as the Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program, amalgamates and enhances the former Community Park Amenities and Playground Structures programs. The 2014 Preliminary Budget proposes increasing total spending for this amalgamated program by $3 million, for a total of $6.3 million.
One of the projects identified as a priority is a new spray pad feature for Machray Park. The city is proposing to spend $725,000 on this facility.
“Investing in our recreation facilities is a top priority for the City of Winnipeg,” said Mayor Katz. “The new Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program will allow the City to make investments in neighbourhood facilities, such as the spray features at Machray Park, which will provide area families with fun, convenient recreation opportunities for years to come.”
“I’m pleased to see residents in North End Winnipeg will have access to a spray pad facility that will give kids a much needed place to play during the hot summer days and knowing that if the weather gets extremely hot, the operating times of the spray pad can be extended as it doesn’t require staffing,” said Mynarski Councillor Ross Eadie.
This funding is subject to approval by City Council and will be considered as part of the 2014 Preliminary Budget deliberations.
