Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Brian Mayes announced $3 million for the revitalization of the St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool.

“The St. Vital Centennial Pool has been a popular summertime destination for neighbourhood families for over 45 years,” said Mayor Katz. “The improvements planned for this facility will improve its accessibility and make it more enjoyable for users of all ages and abilities.”

“I first came to the St. Vital Outdoor Pool in the late 1960s when my mother brought my sisters and I to swim,” said Councillor Brian Mayes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services. “Last year I returned with my sons and realized the facility had hardly changed at all. I’m pleased to say that after next year there will be some incredible changes! The money for this project was allocated some years ago, and I’m pleased that my efforts to get construction started are finally paying off.”

The St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool will be the city’s newest outdoor family play experience, in the heart of St. Vital.

The project involves the refurbishment and repair of the existing pool, new pool mechanical systems including a heating system for better user comfort and extended operating season and a new pool building complete with standard and family change rooms, washrooms and lockers.

Other features of the new amenity include:

  • An accessible beach entry area with multiple spray features
  • New pathways, pool decking, fencing and landscaping.
  • Redevelopment of the playground area including a new play structure and swings
  • New bike racks and a connection to the Fermor Avenue Active Transportation pathway

$2.9 million of the $3 million expansion and renovation comes from the City of Winnipeg 2012 Capital Budget.

Councillor Mayes is also contributing an additional $130,000 to the project.

The new facility will be completely accessible and will include a drop-off lane in the parking lot. Construction will begin in the Spring of 2014, with completion expected in the Fall of 2014.
