Winnipeg, MB - Guy Sever and his daughters, Makyla and Lexi, had the opportunity of a lifetime this evening - to see the tree from their North Kildonan home light up in front of City Hall.

During the annual tree-lighting ceremony, Mayor Sam Katz welcomed the Sever family and thanked them for donating their tree for the annual holiday display. The 12 metre-high Colorado blue spruce, donated by the Sever family, was chosen from a possible 270 candidates and transported to City Hall last week, where it was decorated with 9,000 multi-coloured LED bulbs.

The Mayor also presented Chaplain Mark Young with an assortment of toys for the Salvation Army “Toy Mountain” campaign. The purchase of the toys was made possible through the Mayor’s Civic Initiatives fund.

“The holiday season is about sharing and Winnipeggers are known for their generosity,” said Mayor Katz. “Every year, thanks to that generosity and the hard work of the Salvation Army, families in need are given the opportunity to choose something special for their kids from the Toy Mountain. It is a pleasure to once again support this annual campaign.”

The annual Toy Mountain campaign has been making Christmas brighter for Winnipeg kids since 2005. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Winnipeg fire stations and at City Hall until December 19, 2013.
