Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Sam Katz was joined by Councillor Grant Nordman, Speaker of Council; Ann-Marie Howe and Rene Lewis, Co-Chairs of CARP Chapter 47 (Winnipeg West); and Darlene Demkey, CARP Chapter 53 (Winnipeg East) in a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall to mark the United Nations' International Day of Older Persons, National Seniors' Day, as well as the start of Seniors' and Elders' month in Manitoba.
"Seniors are an important and vital part of our community. The City of Winnipeg encourages programming for seniors throughout the city, and strives to ensure that all our services and facilities are age-friendly," said Mayor Katz. "Through the Mayor's Age-Friendly and Seniors Advisory Committee, Winnipeg seniors can be assured that their voices are being heard."
Today at Seniors' and Elders' Day at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg, the City of Winnipeg will be represented at booths staffed by the Winnipeg Police Service, Winnipeg Transit, Community Services, and the Winnipeg Public Library to provide information on age-friendly services available to our senior and elder population.
The Mayor also noted that Winnipeg is well on the way toward being designated as age-friendly under the Age Friendly Manitoba initiative, which recognizes communities that contribute to the participation, health, independence and security of older persons.
