Winnipeg, MB - As a result of early tendering and competitive pricing from the construction industry, the City is now able to spend an additional $7.2 million on Regional Street and Local Street programs.

To ensure the 2013 Adopted Budget for Streets is fully utilized, the City is adding to the regional and local street construction schedule for the remainder of the year by advancing planned 2014 streets work.

“Improving local streets is a top priority for Winnipeggers,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “Moving these projects ahead ensures that we make maximum use of our limited construction season and make optimal use of the increased funds available in our local and regional street budget.”

The 2013 Local Street Renewal budget is $35.86 million, which is already 66 per cent higher than the 2012 budget of $21.65 million. The potential 2013 surpluses are attributable to lower than predicted costs for construction materials, particularly paving asphalt.

The savings the Public Works Department is forecasting are going to go to the following projects:

  • $3.15 million for the survey, design, tendering of Ness Avenue - Whytewold Road to west of Conway Street for construction in 2014.
  • $600,000 for the rehabilitation of additional 2013 local street locations including Victor Lewis Drive and Sheppard Street from Church Avenue to Redwood Avenue.
  • $2 million for immediate emergency river stabilization work along the Red River to protect areas of Lyndale Drive.
  • Adding an additional $1.2 million to the 2013 Thin Bituminous Overlay (TBO) program. This will result in the rehabilitation of an additional 13 local streets, as follows:
    - Willowbend Crescent
    - Granby Bay from Wales Avenue to St. Anne’s Road
    - Clarence Avenue from Hamelin Street to Marshall Bay
    - Code Street from Manitoba Avenue to Selkirk Avenue
    - Lipton Street from Ellice Avenue to Sargent Avenue
    - Idlewild Bay
    - Wolseley Avenue West from St. James Street to Tylehurst Street
    - Stewart Street from Hamilton Avenue to Livinia Avenue
    - Southbound Panet Road, north of Munroe Avenue to Keenleyside Street
    - Driftwood Bay
    - Thom Avenue from Bond Street to Day Street
    - Dowling Avenue from Bond Street to Day Street
    - Westbound Burrows Avenue from Andrews Street to Powers Street

The City will work toward completing all projects by the end of 2013, weather permitting.
