Mayor Katz Announces "No Hunger Summer" Food Drive

Released: June 7, 2013 at 9:40 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Sam Katz is calling on Winnipeggers to donate non-perishable goods in a city-wide food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. "No Hunger Summer" food drive collection bins will be located in 44 community centres and four arenas throughout the city of Winnipeg (see list below), as well as at City Hall.

Nearly 64,000 Manitobans, half of them children, depend on Winnipeg Harvest each month. With children out of school over the summer months, it is increasingly difficult for families who already struggle with putting food on the table.

“This is a chance to make a real difference for hungry families in our community,” said Mayor Katz. “Winnipeggers are known for their generosity, and by working together, we can make sure that all of our citizens have access to nutritious food all summer long.”

The food bank is in urgent need of its “top ten” foodstuffs to meet a need for nutritional items over the summer months, when donations are traditionally slower.

“We thank the Mayor and the City of Winnipeg for their efforts in hosting the ‘No Hunger Summer’ food drive,” said David Northcott, Executive Director of Winnipeg Harvest. “It is so important at this time of year for the community to keep us on their shopping list. Unfortunately, hunger doesn’t take a holiday and the families we feed still rely on us to provide them with healthy, nutritious food.”

All “No Hunger Summer” food drive donations will be generously matched, pound for pound, by Canada Safeway and Peak of the Market.

“Hunger knows no limits and Safeway recognizes the important role we play in helping to ensure fewer go hungry in our community,” shares John Graham, Director of Public Affairs, Canada Safeway. “We applaud Mayor Katz’s leadership in the City of Winnipeg’s ‘No Hunger Summer’ food drive, and value the long-standing partnership we have shared with Winnipeg Harvest. We hope the community will respond generously and are committed to matching all food donations pound for pound collected during the Mayor’s ‘No Hunger Summer’ food drive.”

“Peak of the Market is pleased to match any donations to Mayor Sam Katz’s ‘No Hunger Summer’ food drive, pound for pound, with fresh Manitoba grown vegetables,” said Peak of the Market President and CEO, Larry McIntosh. “The summer is a very challenging time for Winnipeg Harvest to get food donations as many people are away at the cabin or on holidays. Unfortunately, the need for food for those less fortunate never takes a holiday.”

The items most-urgently needed by Winnipeg Harvest are:

  • Canned Fish and Poultry "salmon or tuna (packed in water), chicken or turkey
  • Canned Vegetables and Fruit (packed in juice)
  • Canned Soup - lentil, pea, vegetable
  • Baby Food and Infant Formula
  • Canned Stew, Chili and Baked Beans
  • Peanut Butter
  • Brown Rice - converted or parboiled
  • Whole Wheat/Whole Grain Pasta
  • Canned Spaghetti Sauce or Tomatoes
  • Dry Cereal - high-fibre, non sugar-coated

Note: Bolded items indicate highest-priority.

Winnipeg Harvest is a non-profit, community-based organization committed to providing food to people who struggle to feed themselves and their families. Committed to maximizing public awareness of hunger while working towards long-term solutions to hunger and poverty, Winnipeg Harvest opened its doors in 1985.
