Walter is looking to be adopted |

Winnipeg, MB - Walter has been silent about his personal details since being picked up in the North End in mid-April and brought to the Animal Services Agency by a caring citizen. Despite his lack of verbal communication with Animal Services Agency officials, Walter has otherwise been extremely cooperative during his month-long stay at the Agency by allowing people to play ball with him, take him for walks, and in eating all his kibble.
Walter continues to keep his spirits up with regular attention from the Agency’s kennel staff and volunteers. To view a photo of Walter, click here.
“We know his name is Walter from the ear tattoo he received around 2008,” says Leland Gordon, Chief Operation Officer of the City of Winnipeg Animal Services Agency. “The address and phone number associated with the tattoo have proved a dead end and no one has come looking for Walter. He is a great dog and was clearly someone’s pet and companion as he is perfect on a leash and knows sit and how to shake a paw. We are now trying to find Walter a new home as his owners have failed to contact us.”
Gordon adds: “Animal Services staff have made numerous attempts to find Walter’s owner but tattoos and microchips are not enough when your dog is lost. Dog owners need the total package including a license to fully protect their pet. If Walter had been wearing a current license he would have been likely reunited by 311 or given a free ride home by Animal Services Officers.”
The six-year-old Shepard mix is currently living in kennel number 29 and is one of 44 dogs currently at the Agency’s Logan Avenue facility. Faced with near maximum capacity, Agency officials are running a weekend dog sale to try and re-home as many dogs as possible over the weekend.
Dog Sale:
Friday, May 31 | 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m. |
Saturday, June 1 | 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. |
Sunday, June 2 | 12:00 noon to 4:30 p.m. |
All in-house dog adoptions are only $99 and include license, micro-chip, spay/neuter, basic shots, food and pet health insurance.
Background
Animal Services officials remind the public that dogs over six months of age must have and wear a dog license. Stray dogs found wearing a current license are given a “free ride home” once a year.
What does license revenue fund?
- The essential service of animal control
- Housing and caring for stray dogs
- Attending house fires, car accidents, and police assists to help in the removal of dogs.
- An Adoption Program at Animal Services which allows adoptable dogs to be adopted to new families instead of being euthanized.
- Animal Services Officers to help resolve neighbourhood disputes regarding animals.
In 2012, 927 dogs wearing a current license were reunited by 311 without ever setting foot in the Animal Services’ facility.
