Centre recognized for 25 years of service to the community

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Sam Katz presented the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre (GSCLC) with the City of Winnipeg Organizational Community Service Award, at the Centre’s 25th anniversary dinner on Thursday evening.

The award recognizes the multi-purpose seniors centre, located in the city’s North End, for its 25 years of continuous service to the community. Mayor Katz expressed gratitude on behalf of the City of Winnipeg for the valuable programming and support that the Centre provides.

“For 25 years, seniors have been benefiting from the programming and services at the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre,” said Mayor Katz. “This award acknowledges the Centre’s success in helping older adults stay active and connected to the community - something that is vital to independent living and quality of life.”

The GSCLC is celebrating 25 years at its original location at 1588 Main Street. It was created by the National Council for Jewish Women to provide a social gathering place for seniors. It has since become a full-service centre providing recreational, educational, cultural and social services, as well as fitness, nutrition and support programs benefiting seniors and older adults.

“Gwen Secter is proud of the vital role we play in enhancing the health and well-being of older adults in our community,” said Marilyn Regiec, Executive Director of the GSCLC. “It is a ‘home away from home’ providing social, recreational and spiritual support to all who seek it. Our milestone 25th anniversary celebration will carry us forward into many more years of service here at 1588 Main Street.”

The GSCLC, which is open to everyone, receives funding from the WRHA, as well as the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg and the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. The Centre was named in memory of Gwen Secter, a long-time member of the National Council of Jewish Women and supporter of the Golden Age Club - a pre-cursor to the Centre at 1588 Main.

The City of Winnipeg Organizational Community Service Award is presented to Winnipeg organizations who have demonstrated excellence and outstanding achievement in any field of endeavor, benefiting the social, cultural, or economic well-being of their community. The award was introduced in the 1950s and is usually awarded on the occasion of an anniversary for the organization.
