Winnipeg, MB - In a presentation today at City Hall, Mayor Sam Katz honoured 18-year old Madison Bowey, Winnipeg native and defenseman for the Kelowna Rockets, with the Mayor’s Award for Sports Excellence.
Bowey, along with his Team Canada teammates, won the gold medal at the 2013 World Under-18 Hockey Championships, held in Sochi, Russia in April. Bowey contributed one goal to tie the score at 2-2 in the second period of the tournament’s exciting final game against the United States. The game finished in a 3-2 victory for Team Canada.
“I admire the determination and talent that it takes to compete - and win - at a World Championship level,” said Mayor Katz. “This young man has phenomenal talent and Winnipeggers can be proud of his achievements.”
Bowey spent his childhood playing hockey in Winnipeg. Before joining the Kelowna Rockets, a Western Hockey League team, Bowey played for the Winnipeg Wild AAA.
“Receiving this award from the Mayor is a tremendous honour,” said Bowey.
The Mayor’s Award for Sports Excellence is presented to Winnipeggers who have won gold in a recognized World Championship event. The award was introduced by Mayor Katz in 2008.
