Winnipeg, MB - Today, Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the River Heights Library under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
âÅFor over 50 years, the River Heights Library has been an important part of community life,â said MP Bateman. âÅBy making these investments in local infrastructure, we are helping boost economic activity while creating strong, united, and prosperous communities for years to come.â
The Harper Government's investment of $23,385, matched equally by the City of Winnipeg investment of $23,385, went towards modernizing the circulation counter at the library. Renovations included the reconstruction of the circulation area, lighting upgrades, painting and the installation of new flooring.
âÅIt's important to make sure our libraries provide welcoming and inviting environments for our staff and patrons,â said Councillor Scott Fielding, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services. âÅBy partnering with the federal government, we've been able to modernize this library so that it can meet the day-to-day needs of the community. Libraries are an integral component of our neighbourhoods, which is why this renovation, along with our overall Library Strategy to replace or upgrade libraries, demonstrates our commitment to see these facilities thrive for today and for future generations.â
In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating, small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
