Winnipeg, MB - The public is advised that a major snow hauling operation began last night across the city, to improve visibility and safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Snow hauling will continue around-the-clock for the next few weeks to remove accumulations of snow and ice from bridges and underpasses, and to remove high snow piles from intersections on main routes, around schools, and at some locations where snow storage capacity has been used up. This operation will create additional snow storage space for any future plowing operations that may be required this winter.
To aid the snow hauling operation, Temporary No Parking signs will be placed in advance at some locations where snow will be removed. Motorists are urged to refrain from parking where temporary parking restrictions are in effect, and to find alternate parking locations while the snow hauling operation continues. Vehicles that are parked in violation of a temporary parking restriction may be ticketed and towed.
This major snow hauling operation will utilize dozens of pieces of heavy equipment and trucks, such as front-end loaders, large snow blowers and semi-trailers, and may result in delays for traffic travelling in the vicinity. Motorists are reminded to use extreme care and caution when driving near crews that are working, and to drive to winter road conditions. Drivers are encouraged to factor in additional travel time to get to destinations, slow down to a safe travel speed for winter conditions, and allow appropriate stopping distances.
Plowing operations commenced in accordance with the City Council-approved Snow Clearing and Ice Control Policy, which can be found online at winnipeg.ca/publicworks/snow/snow-clearing-policy.stm
