First documented case of rabies found in Winnipeg since 2006

Winnipeg, MB - Animal Services Agency officials are reminding the public of the importance of keeping their dogs and cats up to date on vaccinations, in particular the rabies vaccination.

Recently, Animal Services Agency officers responded to an urgent call for assistance from a Winnipeg resident whose dog was attacked by a skunk. The 48 kilogram Labrador mix was injured and received immediate veterinary care. The skunk was recovered and sent for rabies testing. The test results were positive for rabies.

Rabies is a fatal, central nervous system disease and is primarily transmitted by saliva, normally through a bite from an infected animal. The dog involved is alive, in good condition, and under a quarantine administered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Animal Health Division.

This is the first documented case of rabies since 2006 in Winnipeg and is an important reminder for all pet owners to ensure their dogs and cats vaccinations are kept up to date.

“It is important that homeowners wildlife-proof their homes and keep their pets up to date on vaccinations. While we must co-exist with wildlife, conflicts are rare and steps must be taken by home and pet owners to minimize risk,” said Animal Services Agency Chief Operating Officer Leland Gordon.

Residents are encouraged to eliminate food and shelter opportunities for wildlife on their property by keeping food indoors, and by closing off sheltering spaces under and around decks and storage sheds.

There are 45 veterinary clinics in Winnipeg that offer pet vaccinations.

Animal Services handles more than 13,300 incidents per year. The agency operates successful adoption, volunteer, and foster programs. License revenues help fund the services provided including housing stray dogs and reuniting them with their owners, attending house fires or car accidents to help in the removal of animals where needed, and providing an Adoption Program.

A contingent of Animal Services officers serve the residents of Winnipeg to help resolve neighbourhood disputes and incidents involving animals. To learn more about the Animal Services Agency visit Winnipeg.ca/animalservices.
