Budget 2013: Molson Street twinning project to address traffic needs in North East Winnipeg

Released: December 17, 2012 at 1:16 p.m.

WINNIPEG, MB - An investment of $7.4 million is being dedicated towards improving traffic flow in the East Kildonan area, which has experienced tremendous growth in recent years.

The plan includes the widening of Molson Street from Munroe Avenue to a point north of the current Concordia intersection and is intended to relieve congestion, particularly at the intersection of Molson Street and Concordia Avenue.

“This is another step in our commitment to improving infrastructure within our city,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “This community has witnessed a boom in housing development, an increase in retail activity, as well as being home to facilities such as Concordia Hospital and Concordia Place, and we recognize the need to support this growth.”

Traffic studies have shown that vehicles waiting to make a left turn off Molson Street onto Concordia Avenue cause backups and delays. In addition, concerns have been expressed by community members that passengers in ambulances and handi-transit vehicles face a bumpy ride due to the current condition of the street.

“Presently, there are two lanes available for east-west traffic on Concordia Avenue, while Molson Street is a single lane in each direction,” said Elmwood Councillor Thomas Steen. “The additional lane will greatly increase capacity and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.”

The exact location of the north limit will be determined through a preliminary engineering study.
