Winnipeg, MB - Private Partnerships.
The C.W. Chuck Wills Award will be presented to the City at the Canadian Council for Public - Private Partnerships conference in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, November 26. This distinguished award is presented to P3 projects at the municipal level as part of the Annual Awards for Innovation and Excellence Program.
“Public infrastructure keeps us safe as we travel from home to work and back again each day,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I’m pleased that the City of Winnipeg has won the C.W. Chuck Wills award in recognition of the Disraeli Bridges public-private partnership. Through this P3 project, we’ve updated critical infrastructure, protected taxpayers from cost overruns, and ensured this major asset is maintained in good condition for the next 30 years.”
This is the second award the City of Winnipeg has received for a P3 project. Earlier this year, the Chief Peguis Trail extension was named 2012 Project of the Year by the Manitoba Chapter of the Project Management Institute. The Chief Peguis Trail extension project also marked the first time a Canadian municipality received a PPP Canada grant, and positioned Winnipeg as a municipal leader on P3 projects.
The major advantages associated with P3s are that they provide the City of Winnipeg with long-term budget certainty, contract discipline and maintenance guarantees.
The Disraeli Bridges Project is Winnipeg’s largest bridge project to date. Replacing the 50-year old structures that span the Red River and the Canadian Pacific Railway main line, the new Disraeli Bridges rejuvenate a critical piece of Winnipeg’s transportation infrastructure with a new design life of 75 years.
