City receives notification of provincial charges for 2011 South End Sewage Treatment Plant incident

Released: October 25, 2012 at 3:29 p.m.
Majority of recommendations already implemented

WINNIPEG, MB - The City has just received formal notification of the charges being laid by the Province of Manitoba with respect to the 2011 South End Sewage Treatment Plant incident, and must now take time to review the charges and the accompanying engineering report to fully understand their implications.

Based on a very preliminary review of the engineering report, it appears that the City has already implemented the majority of the report recommendations, including:

  • regular microscopic evaluations of biomass on-site
  • chlorination infrastructure
  • a polymer dosing system
  • technical procedure for response to filamentous bulking events, including communications protocol

Should similar circumstances arise, these operational improvements make it possible for the City to more quickly detect and respond to any problems, limiting the severity and duration of such an event.
