WINNIPEG, MB - September 27, 2012 - The City of Winnipeg Public Service is recommending that the revenue of approximately $3,000 collected from library fines and fee on Family Literacy Day be contributed to The Winnipeg Foundation's Literacy for Life Fund.

Family Literacy Day is January 27. The contribution would be made over a five-year period (2013 - 2017 inclusive), totaling $15,000.

"This is a unique opportunity to support literacy initiatives in our library system," said Councillor Paula Havixbeck, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee for Protection and Community Services. "By committing an annual contribution to the Literacy for Life Fund, we will ensure that programs and services that promote literacy and a love for reading exist."

The Winnipeg Foundation, in partnership with Community Services Department (Library Services Division) and Literacy Partners of Manitoba, Inc., established the Literacy for Life Fund in February, 2003. Through Federal and Provincial grants, private sector contributions, and private donations, the fund has been able to provide approximately $100,000 in annual grants to public libraries and other literacy agencies in Winnipeg and Manitoba.
