Closure a precautionary safety measure until further course of action determined

WINNIPEG, MB - August 24, 2012 - As a result of findings in an engineering report by Croiser Kilgour & Partners Ltd. that was reviewed today by senior management, the Chief Administrative Officer and the Winnipeg Parking Authority have determined that the Civic Parkade at 171 Princess Street must be closed effective immediately.

Due to the age of the building, the City has been monitoring the parkade on an ongoing basis to ensure its structural integrity. As a precautionary measure and until the proper course of action can be determined, the parkade will be closed until further notice. Signage at the entrance will now indicate that the parkade is closed.

This closure does not affect Winnipeg Police Service vehicles utilizing the underground levels. In addition, James Avenue will be closed between Princess Street and King Street in order to facilitate Winnipeg Police Service operations.

Winnipeg Parking Authority will notify monthly parkers over the weekend that as of Monday, August 27, they will be redirected to the Millennium Library Parkade located at 251 Donald Street. Transit buses will shuttle monthly parkers to and from City Hall throughout the workday.
