WINNIPEG - Starting Monday, June 25, 2012, the City will begin a five-month project to replace the aging water main and the pavement on Fort Street between Graham Avenue and Portage Avenue.
The water main replacement part of the project will cost about $335,000 and is expected to be complete by the end of July.
Pavement reconstruction will begin early August and will cost $2.1 million. This work will also include:
- renewal of sidewalks according to accessibility design guidelines,
- streetscape enhancements, and
- improved street lighting.
Traffic restrictions throughout the five-month project include:
- two northbound lanes open to traffic during the water main replacement,
- two northbound lanes open to traffic Monday to Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the pavement reconstruction and one northbound lane open to traffic at all other times,
- no loading zones or street parking,
- limited sidewalk access due to safety concerns, however pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained, and
- no dedicated cycling lane.

Winnipeg Transit routes will continue to operate on Fort Street throughout construction. The mid-block bus stop between Graham Avenue and Portage Avenue will be temporarily relocated one block south to Fort Street and Graham Avenue. The bus stop at Fort Street and Portage Avenue will remain in service.
