"Through the raising of these flags at this historic intersection, we give thanks for Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and the inspiration, and example of service she has given these last 60 years, said Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz.
The flag-raising coincides with the Central Weekend to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, which takes place from Saturday June 2 to Tuesday June 5, 2012 in London, England, in conjunction with celebratory activities throughout the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth.
In London, England, the British Broadcasting Corporation will hold a concert at Buckingham Palace, and a network of 2,012 beacons will be lit by communities and individuals throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Beacons. The Queen will light the National Beacon, as she did in 2002.
Here in the city, a Diamond Jubilee Candlelight Service of Remembrance will be held by the governments of Canada and Manitoba as well as the City of Winnipeg, on Sunday, June 3 at 8:30 p.m., at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue, to honour all those who have served in Canada's military.
A highlight of the Winnipeg service will be the placing of candles by cadets on each of the more than 11,000 military monuments found in Brookside Cemetery, the largest and oldest military field of honour in Canada.
The Queen's Coronation took place on June 2, 1953 following her ascension to the Throne on February 6, 1952.
