WINNIPEG - April 27, 2012 - Canadians who are homeless or at risk of homelessness will have greater access to transitional housing and support services, announced the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
"Our government is giving a hand-up to Canadians with housing needs and is helping to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty," said Minister Toews. "We are pleased to support the City of Winnipeg in its efforts to find local solutions to local problems. By working together, we are creating community projects and partnerships to improve and create services and facilities for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness."
"We are pleased to partner with the federal government to help Winnipeggers who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless," said Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz. "This arrangement gives us the ability to work with our local agencies that specialize in addressing homelessness issues at the grassroots level. Together, we can identify supports and services that are necessary, and then draw upon the funding to deliver."
The Homelessness Partnering Strategy is investing over $11.5 million in the City of Winnipeg over the next two years. The City will be distributing this funding to local organizations for the development of housing and support services for homeless and at-risk individuals in Winnipeg.
