Change would help reduce mosquito migration into city

WINNIPEG - March 29, 2012 - To reduce adult nuisance mosquito migration into Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Public Service recommends the City enter into a five-year service purchase agreement for nuisance fogging mosquito control services with the Rural Municipalities of West and East St. Paul.

Since 2008, the Public Works Department has been providing yearly monitoring and nuisance fogging services to interested Capital Region municipalities such as East and West St. Paul. In 2011, the Rural Municipalities of West and East St. Paul both requested five-year agreements with the City of Winnipeg instead of single, one-year terms.

These services would continue to be delivered in a manner that does not compromise the City of Winnipeg's ability to meet its own fogging requirements as a first priority.

Providing fogging services to neighbouring communities such as West and East St. Paul would help control mosquito activity in our city and further protect Winnipeggers during the summer months. This initiative would also align with the intent of the Inter-Municipal Shared Services Initiative approved by Council in 2005.

Council approval is required before the Public Service can implement any of the recommendations. The report will be considered by the Standing Policy Committee on Protection and Community Services on Monday, April 2, 2012.
