WINNIPEG - March 12, 2012 - The City of Winnipeg is encouraging residents to check for plumbing leaks during Fix a Leak Week, March 12 - 18, 2012. The most common culprits are toilets and dripping faucets.

Environment Canada has partnered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WaterSense program to share information about the program and promote WaterSense in Canada.

"Monitoring our homes for leaks on a regular basis helps ensure we are all doing our part to protect our precious water resources. Plus, by fixing leaks in your home, you could save hundreds of dollars on your water bill," says Duane Griffin, Senior Water Planning Engineer with the City's Water and Waste Department.

Plumbing leaks can waste water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In many cases, fixture replacement parts are inexpensive, pay for themselves quickly, and can be installed by handy do-it-yourselfers or plumbing professionals.

Fix a Leak Week checklist.

  1. Check for leaks (e.g., toilets, faucets, showerheads).
  2. Fix leaks immediately.
  3. Replace fixtures if necessary with WaterSense labelled models.
