WINNIPEG - March 12, 2012 - City of Winnipeg crews have been repairing potholes since mid-February, and patching efforts were significantly ramped up this past weekend. Today, five pothole patching machines (Roadpatchers) were added to the four hand-asphalting crews already at work, and potholes are being repaired in all areas of the city to facilitate the timely repair of potholes on main routes.
"We are increasing our pothole patching resources to make repairs as quickly as possible to improve roadway conditions," says Ken Boyd, Manager of the Streets Maintenance Division. "At this time of year when we are experiencing numerous freeze/thaw cycles and potholes are starting to appear on city streets, it is important to remember that the number of potholes is directly related to the weather we receive. Although the situation appears to be favourable at this time due to a dryer than usual fall and winter, the situation can potentially change if the weather becomes unfavourable."
Public Works is monitoring road conditions closely and will be focusing patching efforts on main routes (regional streets), bus routes and collector streets, particularly in curb lanes where water and runoff may accumulate.
Citizens are encouraged to report pothole locations by contacting 311 or online using the 311 Self Service option at winnipeg.ca/interhom/311Online/.
The public service would like to remind the public to use caution around crews and heavy equipment operating throughout the city over the coming weeks.
