Katz Creates $1.2m fund for Community Centres

Mayor Sam Katz today announced that the City of Winnipeg has created a Community Centre Renovation Grant Program (CCRGP) of nearly $1m so that his pledge to ensure volunteer board-run community centres can access the much needed assistance they require to complete repairs and focus on programming priorities.

Renovation grant program implemented; program grants double

WINNIPEG - January 26, 2012 - Mayor Sam Katz today announced that the City of Winnipeg has created a Community Centre Renovation Grant Program (CCRGP) of nearly $1m so that his pledge to ensure volunteer board-run community centres can access the much needed assistance they require to complete repairs and focus on programming priorities.

This commitment will also double the annual Community Centre Program Grants available to board-run facilities; combined, the new fund and the increased program grant will assist these centres to best meet the needs of their youth and families in the communities they serve.

"I committed to ensure that the City plays a much bigger role so our volunteer boards can focus solely on the community and meet their needs," said Mayor Sam Katz. "Through this commitment today, we are eliminating the 'either-or' situation centres faced in the past where Homework Club or programming staff positions were in jeopardy if repairs to the facility were imminent."

Funding for the CCRGP, totaling up to $965,000 annually, comes from dedicating 15% of total City land sale proceeds; an increase of up to $235,000 in the annual Programming Grant to the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres (GCWCC), to a maximum of $470,000 will be funded by the Land Operating Reserve.

During his 2010 civic election campaign, Mayor Katz promised to create new funding programs for volunteer board-run facilities so they can implement programs and priorities that they have established for the community.

"The announcement of additional funding for Community Centre renovation projects is very welcome," said Marlene Amell, Executive Director of the GCWCC. "All centres will be eligible to apply for funding to ensure they are able to undertake projects that are necessary to make their centre a safe, warm and inviting place to be."

The report on Increased Funding for Community Centres will be considered at Executive Policy Committee on Wednesday February 1st, and City Council on February 22nd, 2012.
