National Construction Codes

The currently enforced 2010 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) addresses the design and construction of new buildings and the substantial renovation of existing buildings. In 2011, Manitoba adopted the 2010 NBCC as the Manitoba Building Code (MBC) that included the Manitoba amendments.

The NBCC is available as a free download or for purchase in print format from the National Research Council Canada. The MBC  is available for free download through the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Can I submit building permit applications using the 2015 or the 2020 National Building Code in Manitoba?

Not yet. The 2020 NBCC will be adopted for construction in Manitoba on January 1, 2024. See the 2024 Building Code Implementation bulletin. The 2015 NBCC was not adopted for construction in Manitoba.

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner is responsible for adoption of the NBCC in the province. Information on current Code adoption can be found in the "Codes and Standards" section at the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
