Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and may have been related to the home’s stove.

Avoid a fire in your kitchen by following these tips:

  • Never leave anything that can catch fire near the stove, even if it is turned off. When you turn the stove on later, or if it is turned on by accident, the flammable items could catch fire.

  • Never leave the kitchen when you’re cooking something on the stovetop.

  • If you’re baking something inside the oven, set a timer and check on it regularly.

  • Keep all flammable items away from the stove when you’re cooking, including utensils, packaging, or fabric items.

  • Keep kids and pets away from the stove when it’s on.

Vacant buildings

Call 9-1-1 if you see someone actively entering a vacant building or removing boards from windows or doors from a building.

If you notice boarded windows or doors that have been breached, but you do not see someone actively entering or trying to enter the building, report the incident to 311 by phone or online.
