Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to three structure fires this morning.
Archibald Street fire
At 10:47 on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant commercial building in the 0-100 block of Archibald Street.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found heavy black smoke and flames coming from the structure. Firefighters launched a defensive fire attack, using handlines and an aerial ladder to apply water to the fire. They declared the fire under control at 12:12 p.m.
The extreme temperatures created challenging conditions for firefighters. Crews were rotated in and out of operations to provide them with time to rest and hydrate. No injuries were reported.
The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available. The building was previously damaged by fire in March 2026.
Archibald Street is expected to re-open later this afternoon.
Riverton Avenue fire
At 10:56 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a garage fire in the 500 block of Riverton Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, firefighters found the garage fully engulfed in flames. They launched a fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:21 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
The fire is believed to be accidental but remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
Portage Avenue fire
At 7:48 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a six-storey apartment building.
When crews arrived at the location, they found a balcony fire on the exterior of one of the suites and quickly launched a fire attack. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to the interior of the building, declaring it under control at 8:31 a.m.
Crews located a dog in the suite attached to the balcony. It was brought to safety. Some residents self-evacuated the building, and some sheltered in place in their suites. No injuries were reported.
The fire is believed to be accidental but remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.
