Winnipeg, MB – Since yesterday, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has responded to two fires.
Transcona Bioreserve grass fire
At 4:27 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, WFPS responded to reports of a grass fire in the Transcona Bioreserve near Devonshire Drive. At the scene, crews found a grass fire spanning about 10,000 square feet. Firefighters used specialized wildland firefighting equipment to attack the fire.
Firefighters declared the fire under control at 5:16 p.m.
No injuries were reported. The fire is under investigation.
Ellice Avenue structure fire
At 4:21 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2026, WFPS responded to reports of a structure fire in an apartment building in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue.
At the scene, crew found smoke coming from the building. Firefighters attacked the fire and declared it under control at 5:21 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services responded to the scene to provide temporary support to displaced residents.
The fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
Preventing grass and wildland fires
Grass and wildland fires in Winnipeg are typically wind-driven ground fires involving grass, brush, and dead plant matter. These fires can spread quickly, threatening property and, in some cases, can cause extensive damage.
Avoid a fire by following these safety tips and rules:
- You cannot have an open-air fire in Winnipeg when wind speeds or gusts exceed 25 km/h. This includes fires in approved backyard fire pits, fires in City parks and any other open-air fire, even with a permit.
- Never throw cigarette butts in vegetation, planter pots, or from vehicles.
- Talk to your children about the dangers of starting fires.
- If you see a fire, call 9-1-1 immediately.
