New population estimates released last week by Statistics Canada show the City of Winnipeg has officially surpassed 850,000 residents, marking a major milestone in the city’s growth.
According to the data, the city's population has reached 850,260.
Mayor Scott Gillingham said the achievement underscores Winnipeg’s growing role as an economic and cultural centre.
“Crossing the 850,000 mark is a significant moment for our city,” said Mayor Gillingham. “It reflects the confidence people have in Winnipeg — in our economy, our neighbourhoods, and the opportunities we’re creating for the future.”
Winnipeg added 8,245 new residents in 2025, giving the city the fifth-highest total population increase of any municipality in Canada.
“That growth brings opportunity, but it also reinforces why we need to keep investing in housing, infrastructure, transit, and public services that support a growing city,” said Gillingham
He added that population growth is already shaping city priorities, from accelerating housing construction to prioritizing long-term investments like the new North End Sewage Treatment Plant.
“Growth doesn’t happen by accident,” Gillingham said. “It’s the result of deliberate choices — supporting new housing, strengthening our economy, and making Winnipeg a city people choose. Our focus now is making sure that growth is managed responsibly and benefits residents in every part of the city.”
