Winnipeg, MB – A water main was damaged this afternoon around 3 p.m. while crews installed new underground piping at the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The break caused a change in the water flow. This change can stir up existing sediment in water pipes and cause discoloured water.
For this reason, we are advising residents in north Winnipeg to check for discoloured water before using their water for any purposes that require clean water, such as for drinking, preparing food and beverages, or laundry.
To check if you have discoloured water:
- Turn on a cold water tap and let the water run for a few minutes
- It is best to use a bathtub tap as there is no screen to trap any sediment – you can collect this water and use it to water your plants
- Do not use a hot water tap because it could draw sediment into your hot water tank
- Catch some water in a light-coloured cup
- If the water isn't clear, turn off the tap, wait 30 minutes and try again
You can use the same process to see if the discoloured water has passed.
We continue to work on remediating the impacts of the watermain break and roadway flooding.
Main Street remains closed in both directions between Seaforth Avenue and Chief Peguis Trail.
