Winnipeg, MB – Families in the Westwood area are invited to visit the new playground at John Steel Park, located at 300 Westwood Dr.
The Government of Canada, Manitoba government, and City of Winnipeg officially opened the newly redeveloped park and playground today.
"Parks are more than green spaces—they are places where neighbours connect, children play, and nature thrives," said Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg West. "I’m proud to support initiatives that enhance our quality of life and reflect the values of Winnipeg West."
The project included removing the old playground at the back of the park and installing a new playground next to the existing wading pool, where it is now visible from the sidewalk and street.
The new playground features an accessible ramped play structure, independent play equipment, and swings.
“This new playground will provide a safe, welcoming space for families to come together and enjoy,” said Logan Oxenham, MLA for Kirkfield Park. “I’m proud to see our vibrant community growing with yet another beautiful park where children can play, learn, and thrive.”
Surrounding the playground are new picnic tables and benches. New asphalt pathways have also been installed throughout the park.
“Restoring John Steel Park has given this space new life,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. “The upgraded playground and amenities will provide families with a safe, accessible, and welcoming place to gather, play, and connect with their community for years to come.”
Council approved funding for the project through the COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which focuses on enhancing active transportation, improving regional park infrastructure, and adding accessible recreational amenities in underserved areas of the city. The project’s budget was $308,100, with $218,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund and $90,100 from the City of Winnipeg’s Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program.
