Winnipeg, Manitoba – The City of Winnipeg is taking new action in the fight against homelessness.
We’re working with the Province of Manitoba and non-profit partners to add five new supportive housing residences across the city.
“Supportive housing is a proven, effective tool in reducing homelessness, with long-term benefits for residents and neighbourhoods,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “These five sites represent the first phase of my commitment to provide City land for supportive housing, with more to come next year. I’m grateful that Premier Kinew’s government will be a partner to make sure these new units are built quickly and serviced safely.”
For the first phase, the following five City-owned sites have been selected:
- 546 Sherburn St.
- 1168/1172 Plessis Rd.
- 626 Stella Ave.
- 75 Poseidon Bay
- 2546 McPhillips St.
We invite Winnipeggers to learn more about the sites and upcoming rezoning at one of three open houses:
- Transcona East End Community Centre – Tuesday, September 2, 2025 (4 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
- Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex – Wednesday, September 3, 2025 (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Bill and Helen Norrie Library – Thursday, September 4, 2025 (4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.)
Supportive housing provides safe, stable homes with wrap-around health, wellness, and safety services. These homes are designed for people who need both housing and supports.
The units will provide shelter for people at key life stages, including:
- Refugees and refugee claimants
- People leaving hospitals
- Youth exiting care
- People transitioning from encampments
- People at risk of gender-based violence
- People with mental health needs
