Mayor Scott Gillingham is nominating Amit Kapoor to the Winnipeg Police Board to fill a citizen member vacancy created by the expiry of Kevin Selch’s term.
Kapoor is the owner of Kapson Family Restaurants Ltd., which operates several McDonald’s franchises in Winnipeg. He has also served on the boards of the RBC Convention Centre, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and the Young Presidents Organization, and is a member of the Business Council of Manitoba.
“Retail crime continues to be a big concern in our city,” said Gillingham. “As a business owner who deals with frontline public safety issues every day, Amit brings a valuable perspective to the Police Board. He understands what’s at stake for workers, customers, and communities.”
Kapoor’s nomination will be considered by Executive Policy Committee before going to Council for approval.
As part of the governance changes, Gillingham will also be stepping down as City Council’s representative on the Board. Council will appoint a new councillor to fill that role.
“With a new police chief in place and the launch of the Safe Winnipeg Initiative, this is the right time for me to step away from the Police Board,” said Gillingham.
