Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires this morning.

Winnipeg Avenue fire

At 5:55 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey residence in the 800 block of Winnipeg Avenue.

When crews arrived at the scene, they encountered heavy black smoke coming from the structure with one individual trapped on an upper floor. Firefighters rescued the individual using ladders on the exterior of the residence. Crews simultaneously launched an interior fire attack.

Freezing temperatures created challenging conditions for firefighters, with the area around the scene being ice-covered and slippery. Crews were rotated in and out of operations as required to provide them with breaks from the cold. The fire was declared under control at 6:54 a.m.

Crews remain on scene at this time, working to put out hotspots.

The individual rescued from the residence was assessed by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported. Firefighters located and rescued two cats from the residence.

Road closures in the area will remain in place until work is completed at the scene. Once the incident is mitigated, residents should use caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire will be frozen, creating slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available. The residence suffered significant smoke, fire and water damage.

Parr Street fire

At 6:08 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey townhouse in the 0 to 100 block of Parr Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found the heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the units. Firefighters worked to knock down the flames so they could enter and fight the fire from inside. Crews remain on scene at this time working to fully extinguish the fire. They are being rotated in and out of operations as required to provide them with breaks from the extreme cold.

All occupants in the impacted unit self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One of them was injured jumping from a second-floor window. They were assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Occupants of the adjacent townhome units were evacuated by firefighters. A Winnipeg Transit bus was deployed to the scene to provide shelter to the evacuees.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to provide temporary support to the displaced residents.

The structure has sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage.
